How to Plan a Romantic Sarasota Beach Elopement

Not every wedding needs 100 guests, a ballroom, a seating chart, and months of complicated planning.
Sometimes the most meaningful wedding is simply two people standing barefoot in the sand, listening to the waves and promising their lives to each other.
Over the years at Plan My Beach Wedding, we've seen just how beautiful small weddings can be.
A Sarasota beach elopement can be intimate, romantic, affordable, and incredibly personal. And "eloping" doesn't necessarily mean running away in secret anymore. Your elopement might be just the two of you, or you may invite a handful of the people closest to you.
If you're considering getting married on Siesta Key, Lido Beach, or another Sarasota-area beach, here's what you should know.
What Is a Beach Elopement?
The meaning of elopement has changed quite a bit.
Years ago, people often thought of an elopement as secretly running away to get married.
Today, many couples intentionally choose an elopement because they want their wedding to feel simple and personal.
You might have:
Just the two of you
Your children
Your parents
A few close friends
A small group of family members
There's no magic number.
What matters is creating a wedding that feels right for you.
Choose the Right Sarasota Beach
Two of our favorite choices for Sarasota elopements are Siesta Key and Lido Beach.
If you've dreamed of getting married on one of Florida's most famous beaches, Siesta Key is hard to beat.
Its beautiful white quartz sand and Gulf sunsets create an incredible setting for a small ceremony.
Because Siesta Key is so popular, however, it can also be busy.
If privacy is one of your biggest priorities, talk with us about your date, ceremony time, and location.
Lido Beach is another beautiful choice and is often my recommendation for couples looking for a somewhat quieter atmosphere.
You still get beautiful white sand and Gulf sunsets, but Lido is generally less crowded than Siesta Key.
It's also close to St. Armands Circle, which is especially convenient if you'd like to have dinner or drinks after your ceremony.
An Elopement Can Still Have Beautiful Décor
Small doesn't have to mean plain.
You can still walk down an aisle.
You can still have an arbor.
You can still have flowers, chairs, music, photography, and beautiful decorations.
The difference is that you can choose the things that actually matter to you instead of feeling like you have to include every traditional wedding detail.
Sometimes a simple ceremony setup surrounded by the natural beauty of the Gulf is all you need.
Pick the Right Ceremony Time
For most Sarasota beach elopements, sunset is my favorite time of day.
The Gulf of Mexico gives us beautiful sunset views, and the softer evening light is wonderful for photographs.
But there's an important detail couples sometimes don't realize:
Your ceremony shouldn't begin at the exact time the sun sets.
We want enough time for your ceremony and photographs while there's still beautiful natural light.
Your ideal ceremony time will change throughout the year, so we'll help you plan around the sunset on your specific wedding date.
Don't Forget About the Marriage License
Even when your wedding is small, you still need to take care of the legal side of getting married.
If you're traveling to Florida from another state, make sure you understand the current Florida marriage-license requirements and allow enough time to complete anything required before your ceremony.
Requirements can change, so I always recommend checking the current information before traveling rather than relying on an old wedding blog or social media post.
What About a Beach Permit?
Depending on the location and type of ceremony, local beach permits and rules may apply.
This is one of those details that can feel confusing when you're planning from somewhere else.
Our couples don't have to figure it all out by themselves.
Plan My Beach Wedding handles the necessary beach permits for our ceremonies.
That's one less thing to worry about.
Do You Need an Officiant?
For a legal wedding ceremony, you'll need someone authorized to solemnize your marriage.
Our wedding packages include an officiant, so you don't need to arrive in Sarasota and start searching for someone to perform your ceremony.
Your ceremony can still feel personal and meaningful even if you're meeting your officiant here in Florida.
Should You Hire a Photographer for a Small Elopement?
Yes—if photographs are important to you.
I've worked as a wedding photographer for many years, and one thing I've learned is that the size of the wedding has nothing to do with how important the photographs become afterward.
You may only have a 15- or 20-minute ceremony.
But those photographs can stay in your family for generations.
And when there are only a few guests—or no guests at all—your photographs become an especially important way to share your wedding with everyone back home.
What Should You Wear?
Whatever makes you feel like yourself.
A beach elopement doesn't require an elaborate wedding gown or formal tuxedo unless that's what you want.
Brides can wear anything from a traditional wedding dress to a simple flowing beach dress.
Grooms often choose lightweight suits, linen, dress shirts, or other comfortable options.
One thing I usually don't recommend?
High heels in soft beach sand.
Bare feet, flat sandals, and beach-friendly shoes are much easier.
And on Siesta Key, that beautiful quartz sand can be surprisingly comfortable under bare feet.
What If It's Just the Two of Us?
That's completely okay.
Some couples worry that a ceremony without guests will somehow feel less like a "real wedding."
It won't.
You still have the ocean.
You still have your vows.
You still have that moment when you look at each other and realize:
We're married.
Sometimes removing all the extra distractions allows couples to concentrate on what the day was supposed to be about in the first place.
Can We Bring Our Children?
Absolutely.
An elopement can be a beautiful choice for blended families or couples who want their children involved.
Children can carry flowers, participate in a reading, walk a parent down the aisle, help with a symbolic ceremony, or simply stand beside you.
And if they're little and don't perform their "job" perfectly?
That's okay too.
Some of the sweetest wedding moments happen when children do exactly what children do.
What Should We Do After the Ceremony?
This is one of the best parts of a Sarasota elopement.
You don't necessarily need to rent a reception venue.
You might go to a beautiful restaurant, have champagne and dinner, take a sunset cruise, return to your hotel, or spend the evening exploring Sarasota.
For a Lido Beach elopement, St. Armands Circle is especially convenient because there are restaurants and shops nearby.
Siesta Key couples can also continue their celebration around Siesta Key Village or elsewhere in Sarasota.
Your wedding celebration can be as simple or elaborate as you want it to be.
What If It Rains?
Florida weather can change quickly.
Seeing rain on your weather app several days before your ceremony doesn't mean your elopement is ruined.
Sometimes showers move through and disappear.
When conditions are safe, a little flexibility can make a big difference.
Dangerous weather and lightning are another matter—safety always comes first.
But don't spend your entire wedding vacation refreshing the weather app every five minutes.
We've dealt with Florida weather before.
Make Your Elopement Part of a Vacation
If you're traveling to Sarasota to get married, why not stay for a few days?
You can enjoy the beaches, visit St. Armands Circle, explore downtown Sarasota, take a sunset cruise, enjoy local restaurants, and simply spend some time together.
Instead of spending your wedding week running from appointment to appointment, you can actually enjoy being newlyweds.
That's one of the things I love most about destination elopements.
💙 From Lu's Experience
After being part of hundreds of beach weddings, I've learned something important:
The number of people standing around you doesn't determine how special your wedding is.
I've seen big weddings filled with family and friends, and I've seen tiny ceremonies where almost nobody was there.
Both can be beautiful.
I think couples sometimes feel pressure to create the wedding everyone else expects them to have.
But this is your marriage.
If your perfect wedding is the two of you standing barefoot on a Sarasota beach at sunset, that's enough.
If you want your children beside you, bring them.
If you want your parents there, invite them.
If you want an arbor covered in flowers even though there are only four guests, have the arbor.
There isn't a rule saying a small wedding deserves less attention or less beauty.
To us, every wedding matters.
