Siesta Key is famous for its incredibly soft, white quartz sand. Unlike many Florida beaches, the sand remains surprisingly cool under your feet—even during the warmer months.

And that brings me to one of my first pieces of advice:

Forget the heels.

Walking through Siesta Key's soft sand in heels simply isn't practical. Barefoot, sandals, or barefoot jewelry work beautifully, and there's something wonderfully romantic about exchanging your vows with your toes in the sand.

The turquoise Gulf water, wide beach, gorgeous sunsets, and white sand also create an incredible natural backdrop for wedding photography.

Do You Need a Permit for a Siesta Key Beach Wedding?

Most organized beach weddings on Siesta Key require a permit, particularly when you're setting up chairs, arches, décor, or other ceremony equipment.

There are designated areas where ceremonies can take place, and popular locations and dates can book up.

What Is the Best Time of Year for a Siesta Key Wedding?

For beautiful weather, spring and fall are especially popular.

April, May, June, October and November tend to be particularly busy wedding months, so couples considering a weekend ceremony during these periods should plan ahead.

April can also coincide with spring-break crowds, something worth considering if you want a quieter ceremony.

July and August are usually the months I caution couples about most. Sarasota can be extremely hot and humid. Even an evening ceremony can still be very warm, and the heat can be uncomfortable for couples and guests.

If you have your heart set on summer, timing and guest comfort become especially important.

What Is the Best Time of Day for a Siesta Key Beach Wedding?

Sunset ceremonies are extremely popular—and for good reason.

The temperature is generally more comfortable later in the day, and the light around sunset can be beautiful for wedding photographs.

However, your ceremony shouldn't necessarily begin at the exact time listed as sunset. You want enough time for the ceremony and photographs while beautiful natural light remains.

This is one of those details where working with someone familiar with local beach weddings makes a difference.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?

For popular spring and fall weekends, I recommend planning six to twelve months ahead whenever possible.

Weekdays can offer much more flexibility, and sometimes we can accommodate ceremonies with considerably less notice.

Winter holidays and other popular travel periods can also fill months in advance.

If you already know the date you want, it's better to check availability early.

What Happens if It Rains?

Florida weather doesn't always cooperate with our plans.

A weather app showing rain doesn't necessarily mean your beach wedding is ruined. Florida showers can appear and disappear quickly.

Over the years, I've learned that sometimes the best thing we can do is simply wait.

If waiting 30 minutes allows a rain shower to pass and gives my bride beautiful wedding photographs without an umbrella covering her face, I'd much rather wait when circumstances allow.

I can't control the weather—as much as I wish I could—but I can do everything possible to work with it.

Can Guests With Mobility Issues Attend a Beach Wedding?

Yes, and this is something families sometimes don't realize.

Traditional wheelchairs can be difficult to maneuver through soft sand, but beach wheelchairs with large tires are available for rent in the Sarasota area. Some companies will even deliver them directly to your beach location.

If a parent, grandparent, or another important guest has significant mobility limitations, don't automatically assume they can't participate in your beach ceremony.

There are often solutions.

Can You Have Alcohol at a Siesta Key Beach Wedding?

Siesta Key is located in Sarasota County, where alcohol is generally permitted on the beach subject to applicable beach rules.

This is different from nearby Manatee County beaches, where alcohol rules are different.

Because local regulations can change, couples should always verify the current rules when planning their celebration.

Can You Have Sparklers or a Fire on the Beach?

Beach fires aren't permitted, which also means couples shouldn't plan their ceremony around sparklers or similar fire-based send-offs.

Fortunately, there are beautiful alternatives.

Bubbles and real flower petals can create gorgeous photographs without introducing fire onto the beach.

I especially encourage couples to choose real petals rather than artificial ones. Fake petals can remain behind, litter our beaches, and negatively affect local wildlife.

We get to celebrate in this beautiful environment, so I believe we also have a responsibility to take care of it.

Make Your Ceremony About More Than Just the Couple

Some of the most meaningful ceremonies I've seen weren't necessarily the biggest or most elaborate.

They were the ones where couples included the people they love.

A mother of the bride might do a short reading. A couple may choose to walk down the aisle with both parents instead of following tradition. Children, siblings, grandparents, or close friends can participate in small ways that make the ceremony incredibly personal.

Sometimes a simple reading is enough to make a mother feel that she's part of this important moment, just as much as the father walking his daughter down the aisle.

Those are often the moments people remember.

Remembering Loved Ones Who Can't Be There

A beach wedding can also include beautiful ways of honoring family members who have passed away.

Couples can bring a photograph, flowers, or another meaningful keepsake and place it on a chair during the ceremony.
