Best Time of Year for a Sarasota Beach Wedding: A Local Planner’s Guide

One of the first decisions you'll make when planning a Sarasota beach wedding is choosing your date. Florida's Gulf Coast is beautiful throughout the year, but that doesn't mean every month offers the same beach wedding experience.

After years of coordinating weddings on Siesta Key, Lido Beach, and Sarasota's Gulf Coast, I've learned that temperature, crowds, sunset times, holidays, and even spring break can make a big difference.

So, when is the best time of year to get married on the beach in Sarasota?

The answer depends on what's most important to you.

Spring Beach Weddings in Sarasota

Spring is one of our busiest—and most beautiful—times of year for Sarasota beach weddings.

April, May, and June are particularly popular with our couples. The beaches are beautiful, sunset ceremonies can be gorgeous, and it's an ideal time for destination couples who want to combine their wedding with a Florida vacation.

Because spring is so popular, though, availability can become limited.

For popular spring weekends, I recommend booking six months to a year ahead whenever possible. Weekdays generally offer more flexibility, and occasionally a date may still be available with much less notice.

One Thing to Know About April

April deserves its own mention.

It's one of the busiest times of year in our area, and spring break can bring many additional visitors to Sarasota's beaches.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't get married in April. We coordinate beautiful April weddings.

It simply means that choosing your ceremony location, date, and time carefully becomes especially important if a quieter beach is a priority.

Summer Beach Weddings: June, July & August

Florida summers bring warm Gulf water, long days, and beautiful sunsets.

They also bring heat and humidity.

June is popular for weddings, but as we move into July and August, temperatures can become extremely uncomfortable for a formal outdoor ceremony.

And when I say hot, I mean hot.

I've seen brides concerned about their makeup melting, grooms sweating through their wedding clothes, and guests who are simply miserable sitting in the heat.

Even an 8:00 p.m. ceremony in July or August can still feel extremely warm.

That's why, when couples have flexibility, July and August are the two months I usually recommend avoiding for a Sarasota beach wedding.

If those are the only months that work for you, we can certainly plan around them. I just believe couples should know what to expect before choosing their date.

Fall Beach Weddings in Sarasota

Fall is another wonderful season for beach weddings, and October and November are especially popular.

Temperatures begin becoming more comfortable, sunsets remain beautiful, and the weather can create a wonderful setting for an outdoor ceremony.

Because October and November are busy wedding months for us, couples hoping for a weekend ceremony should reserve their date early.

Fall is an excellent choice for destination couples who want Florida sunshine without the intense midsummer heat.

Winter Beach Weddings

Winter in Sarasota is very different from winter in most of the country—which is exactly why destination couples love it.

While friends and relatives back home may be dealing with snow and freezing temperatures, Sarasota can offer mild weather and beautiful Gulf Coast sunsets.

December, January, and February can all be wonderful choices for a beach wedding.

However, don't assume winter automatically means the beaches or accommodations will be empty.

Florida attracts many winter visitors, and holiday periods can become especially busy. Christmas, New Year's, Valentine's Day, and holiday weekends may require additional advance planning.

What Are the Busiest Months for Sarasota Beach Weddings?

From our experience, April, May, June, October, and November are particularly busy.

If you want a weekend wedding during one of those months, the sooner you choose your date, the better.

For popular spring and fall weekends, six months to a year ahead is a good target.

Weekday weddings often book more slowly, so couples with flexible schedules may have considerably more options.

What Is the Best Day of the Week?

Saturday may be the traditional wedding day, but there's no rule saying your beach wedding has to happen on a weekend.

For destination weddings, weekdays can actually be wonderful.

Your guests are often already traveling and staying in Sarasota for several days, so a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday ceremony may work perfectly.

Weekdays can also give you more flexibility when choosing your preferred beach location and date.

If having a particular ceremony spot is more important to you than having a Saturday wedding, consider a weekday.

What Is the Best Time of Day for a Beach Wedding?

For most couples, I strongly prefer ceremonies later in the day, closer to sunset.

A sunset beach wedding gives you something a morning ceremony simply can't: the Gulf of Mexico glowing behind you as the sun begins to disappear over the water.

It also provides beautiful light for photography.

Sunrise sounds romantic, but there's something important couples don't always realize about Sarasota's Gulf beaches:

The sun doesn't rise over the Gulf.

The sunrise happens on the opposite side.

The beach also becomes bright very quickly in the morning, which can leave couples and guests squinting in photographs.

That's why sunset ceremonies are so popular here.

Don't Schedule Your Ceremony at the Exact Sunset Time

This is an important detail.

If Google tells you sunset is at 7:45 p.m., that doesn't necessarily mean your ceremony should begin at 7:45.

You want time for:

• Your ceremony

• Couple portraits

• Family photographs

• Wedding-party photographs

• Beautiful sunset portraits

If you begin too late, you can quickly run out of natural light.

Your wedding coordinator and photographer can help determine the best ceremony time based on the sunset for your specific wedding date.

Siesta Key or Lido Beach?

The season can also affect which Sarasota beach feels right for you.

Siesta Key is famous for its incredibly soft white quartz sand and is one of Sarasota's most recognizable destinations. It's gorgeous, but its popularity means it can also become quite busy.

Lido Beach also offers beautiful white sand and Gulf sunsets but is generally less crowded. It's also close to St. Armands Circle, making it convenient for couples who want to have dinner or a small reception nearby after the ceremony.

Neither beach is universally "better."

The right choice depends on the experience you want.

Consider Your Guests When Choosing a Date

It's easy to choose a wedding date based entirely on what works for the couple.

But remember who's coming with you.

Young children, grandparents, and guests with health or mobility concerns may tolerate heat very differently than you do.

If you have elderly guests or small children attending, avoiding the hottest part of the year—and the hottest part of the day—can make the ceremony much more enjoyable for everyone.

Your guests came a long way to celebrate with you. We want them to enjoy it too.

If you asked me for the single biggest mistake couples make when choosing a Sarasota beach wedding date, I'd say it's underestimating Florida's heat.

People imagine a beautiful summer evening by the water and think the Gulf breeze will make everything comfortable.

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes it doesn't.

I've watched brides worry about melting makeup, grooms sweat through their shirts, and guests spend the ceremony thinking about how hot they are instead of listening to the vows.

That's why I'm honest with my couples about July and August.

I'd rather tell you something you may not want to hear before you choose your date than have you discover it while you're standing on the beach in your wedding dress.

There are so many beautiful months to get married in Sarasota.

Choose one that allows you to actually enjoy being outside.

So, What Is the Best Month for a Sarasota Beach Wedding?

There's no single perfect month for every couple.

If you want beautiful weather and don't mind planning ahead, spring and fall are excellent choices.

If you're considering summer, June can work beautifully, but think carefully before choosing July or August because of the heat.

Winter can be wonderful for destination weddings, but keep holidays and seasonal visitors in mind.

Most importantly, choose your date based on the experience you want—not simply because a particular Saturday happens to be available.
